Flavored Coke
Published on: June 14, 2003
Dear Phil: Must share this with you re: flavored Coke. Years ago, when I was in the seventh grade and walking two miles home from junior high school, I used to stop at the local drugstore and get a flavored Coke to refresh myself. Unfortunately this habit of drinking Coke on the way home from school started when I was in kindergarten when I was 4 - a habit that has been very hard for me to break. Anyway, you can imagine my delight at finding flavored Coke in 1947! There were cherry, chocolate and lemon available and I think they were preceded by cherry phosphate, which was before my time. I loved the chocolate coke, but as you mentioned it takes some skill to make these as it can be very messy as the combination of acid and alkaline cause the foaming to overflow the glass. In later years, I would ask the waitress if she knew how to make this. The Bob's Big Boy chain of restaurants here in CA, still offered it on the menu, but other restaurants didn't. I learned to make them at home, until I found that I was addicted to Coke and stopped drinking it. That is.... until I discovered the Vanilla Coke and the Cherry RC available. Now I am breaking the habit once again. I just enjoy the flavor and the false energy they give me, and also the happy memories of days gone by. Don't know whether this current flavor packet idea will 'take'. Rather doubt it. Have you heard what flavors will be available? I really enjoy your website, it is truly informative. I am one of those people who always finds great new products and soon thereafter they are no longer available, since the wholesaler no longer carries them. This happened with some great new Kraft dressings who discontinued them before they even got on the shelves of most supermarkets, and Ginger Twist by Lipton is so hard to find that one has to order it from the company directly. But there were other things, in the past, like Paddies, which were small fine Brillo pads with a backing and contained a soap that could clean virtually everything including aluminum window frames so well, but it was taken off the market. That was around 1970. Just wish they wouldn't remove good things, yet leave inferior products in the market for years. Thanks for listening, Phil. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, Ms. Dale Louise Odom Solvang, CA 93463
