Potassium is One of the Most Critical Mineral Macronutrients!

Published on: May 24, 2007

Potassium is important for the proper functioning of our bodies. It helps maintain normal blood pressure, regulate fluids, controls the mineral balance in and out of cells, muscle contractions, and the proper transmission of nerve impulses.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommendation for adults is 3500 mg of potassium a day – here’s just a few of the foods that naturally contain this vital nutrient:

  • 3.5 ounces of apricots contain 1380 mg

  • An average serving of tomato puree (3 oz) has 985 mg

  • One baked potato with skin has 844 mg

  • One half of an avocado has 742 mg

  • A two-ounce bag of potato chips has 570 mg

  • One quarter of a cup of raisins has 563 mg

  • One cup of orange juice has 474 mg

  • And the food synonymous with potassium, an average size banana, has just 451 milligrams

Remember, processing foods often reduces their potassium content, as will cooking them in water. And if you want to maximize potassium, be sure to eat the skins of fruits and vegetables.
