Halloween is just around the corner and carving pumpkins is one of America's favorite Halloween activities - in fact, more than 20 million will get in the Halloween spirit this year by visiting a pumpkin patch and carving up a pumpkin. Gene Granta, pumpkin carving expert, joins Lempert with some tips on how to carve beyond the standard jack-o-lantern.
Halloween is coming and that means candy…lots and lots of candy. But there are options….like healthier trick-or-treat alternatives without all the artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, or preservatives. Dawn Van Hee, CEO/co-founder of NaturalCandyStore.com (the first natural, organic, and completely artificial-ingredient-free candy store in the world) talks with Lempert about treats candy-lovers can have permission to eat! www.NaturalCandyStore.com
What do you do if your roommate/ partner/ co-worker consistently tosses their yogurt cartons in the trash? How can you gently correct their recycling behavior? If there are certain foods you don't eat or are allergic to, what's the polite way to let your dinner host know? If you're vegetarian dining out with a group, can you insist on a meat-free restaurant? You may have wondered about the answers to these very questions. CHOW.com columnist Helena Echlin who pens the popular "Table Manners" advice column, joins Lempert with answers to these and other food and dining etiquette questions. www.CHOW.com
On November 1st and 2nd, Mexicans celebrate El Dia de los Muertos, THE DAY OF THE DEAD. Now this may sound gruesome, scary, ugly and sad, however, that is the farthest from the truth. Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died. Mexican-born tequila maker, Enrico Caruso shares with Lempert the traditions of the annual celebration. www.4copastequila.com
This week's 'stolen' recipe is Pumpkin and Tomato Soup, courtesy of Chef Morris Harrar of Tisserie in NYC. So, when Halloween is over, scoop out those pumpkins and prepare this soup for your tired and hungry trick-or-treaters! www.tisserie.com With all the energy drinks on the market today, do we really need another one? Well, Syzmo has hit the shelves to redefine your perception of energy drinks, which usually contain high fructose corn syrup and actually taste dreadful. Syzmo is the first USDA organic energy drink, the first carbonated beverage to be sweetened with blue agave, and the first and only certified Glycemic Index Tested carbonated beverage in the world - plus is available in great tasting flavors like Passion and Prickly Pear. Jeff O'Neal, President of The Organic Beverage Company joins Lempert with the details. www.syzmo.com A recent study, revealed in the Oct./Nov 2007 issue of Mother Earth News Magazine, suggests that not all eggs are created equal. Tests concluded that hens raised on pasture, or "free-range" hens, produce eggs that are nutritionally superior to most eggs currently sold in supermarkets. Lempert is joined by Cheryl Long, Editor in Chief of Mother Earth News, with the details. www.MotherEarthNews.com/eggs
