Phil's Ice Cream Picks

Published on: July 1, 2004

Indulgence always comes first!

CIAO BELLA - Ciao Bella Gelato, is a purveyor of high-end artisanal gelato and sorbet handmade and using the freshest of ingredients. The flavors are unique and intense, and just this week they won the gold medal at the Fancy Food show for their Chocolate Sorbet. Our favorite is Fresh Mint Chocolate Chunk Gelato and their Coconut (in a half coconut shell) gelato. www.ciaobellagelato.com

BUBBIES Homemade Hawaiian Mochi Ice Cream (yes, the company is named after the founder's grandmother) is made by wrapping a paste of sweet rice around a bite sized one and a quarter ounce ball of ice cream. www.bubbiesicecream.com

For those who love "scoop stores" check these out:

COLDSTONE - Cold Stone Creamery is celebrating the first anniversary of its store in New York ’s Time Square and has introduced ice cream cakes that are the most indulgent and delicious you’ve ever tried. Our favorites are Strawberry Passion (their best seller) and Snickers Supreme. www.coldstonecreamery.com

BASKIN ROBBINS - Still one of our favorite scoop stores is introducing two special flavors: America 's Birthday Cake, Marathon Mint (to commemorate the summer Olympics). www.baskinrobbins.com

Good tastings that are good for us!

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Grand Light ice creams that are among the best you've ever tasted, with a wonderful creamy texture that are actually 50% less fat and 30% less calories with no fake fats or artificial sweeteners. The product is made through a proprietary manufacturing process which is similar to "kneading dough" to disperse the fat and subsequently requires less. www.dreyers.com

Pierre's Carb Success No Sugar Added Ice Cream is sweetened with Splenda Brand Sweetener and tastes the best of all the low-carb ice creams we've tried. Available just in Chocolate and Vanilla so far, but expect more flavors by summer's end. www.pierres.com

Carb Smart - Just about every ice cream novelty you can imagine now comes in a reduced carb version: Creamsicles, Good Humor Bars, Breyer's Ice Cream Sandwiches, and even Klondike Bars. www.icecreamusa.com

Ben & Jerry's Introduces both Karb Karma (for those low carb aficionados and organic ice cream. Now that one of the major brands has gone organic we can expect to see many of the others to follow. www.benjerry.com

And for the ultimate ice cream sensation, do what the Italians do and drizzle a little vinegar over your ice cream. The combination will delight your taste buds! Our recommendation is Minus 8 vinegar, a blend of red and white vinegar ( traditionally slow fermented from extraordinary wine) developed by a chef in Canada that has just come available in the US . www.minus8vinegar.com
