Model Behavior By Melissa T. Shultz
If you don’t want your child to drink soda or chew with his mouth open then you probably shouldn’t either. Experts say role modeling is one of the most natural and effective ways to inspire children to eat right, have good table manners and exercise regularly. In fact, most children develop their eating habits and attitudes about eating and exercise from the grown-ups who care for them. Here are some of the most common mealtime mistakes adults make. See if your routines need tweaking.
Do you take the time to eat breakfast? If you skip it, your child might get the idea that it’s okay. Experts believe that children who eat breakfast have higher test scores, are late less often, are less likely to be overweight and more likely to get enough calcium.
Does your family eat dinner together? The family that sits down to eat together is more likely to have a balanced meal. According to the American Dietary Association, recent research indicates that children who eat frequent family dinners are more likely to take in more calcium, iron, fiber and vitamins and less saturated fat and trans fats. A word of caution, arguing at the table and during mealtimes could backfire and create issues with food.
Do you serve fruits and vegetables every day? Children tend to learn to like the foods they are offered most often. The child who sees his mom or dad eat spinach will most likely try it eventually.
Do you insist your children finish everything on their plate? It’s more important for children to learn the signs of being full, so that they don’t overeat later.
Do you talk a lot about feeling fat and dieting around your children? It can create the wrong impression about self image. Help them focus on being healthy and happy instead.
